What is family cord blood banking?

In family banking, umbilical cord blood stem cells are stored for autologous or directed allogeneic use. A transplantation is autologous when the donor and the recipient are the same person.

In directed allogeneic transplantation, umbilical cord blood stem cells from a healthy sibling are transplanted to another sibling suffering from a condition that can be treated by stem cell transplantation, within the family.
